How early can you go to family functions with a married but separated girl?

I've been seeing this girl, who happens to actually be my roomate, but she's technically still married (working on the divorce). She wants me to go with her to family functions, but I'm a little weary about it. Is it acceptable to go with her since she is clearly separated, or do I need to wait for the papers to be done?
