How does ethanol remove impurities from a substance?

I doing a chemistry practical, and it says that if I wash the precipitate(PbO2) collected from a reaction with ethanol, the percentage yield will be lower than 100%, but if I dont it will be higher, can someone explain how ethanol removes impurities from a precipitate.
